What Does "Multi-Cloud" Mean?

Multi-cloud describes an environment that relies on multiple clouds - such as OpenStack, Microsoft Azure or AWS.

For instance, you may be running a workload that requires large pools of storage and networking resources on a private cloud, such as OpenStack.

At the same time, you may have a workload that needs to scale up or down quickly on a public cloud, such as Microsoft Azure or AWS. Each workload is running on the ideal cloud, but now you have multiple clouds to manage.

What's the Difference Between Multi-Cloud and Hybrid Cloud?

Multi-Cloud

You rely on multiple cloud providers - such as AWS, Microsoft, OpenStack and VMware - for multiple applications. You may also rely on homegrown clouds, telecom clouds and other third-party clouds.

Hybrid Cloud

You connect multiple deployment platforms - such as public cloud, private cloud, dedicated servers and on-premises servers - within a single application.

What's Driving Multi-Cloud Adoption?

Unique Needs

You can run each workload where it performs best, for the lowest cost.

Legacy Apps

You can avoid the pain of migrating legacy apps to a new platform.

Desire to Diversify

You can avoid vendor lock-in and latency while creating redundancy.
